The story in short
Built in 1156 on a ridge of yellow sandstone, Jaisalmer grew fat on the camel caravans crossing between India and Central Asia. Merchant families spent their fortunes on havelis carved like lace. When the trade routes closed the city fell quiet — which is why it survives today almost exactly as it was.
