The story in short
Founded in 1727 by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II, Jaipur was India's first planned city — laid out on a nine-block grid drawn from ancient architectural texts. It was painted pink in 1876 to welcome a royal guest, and the colour stayed. Today the old walled city still trades the way it did 300 years ago: gemstones, block prints and silver, street by street.
