The story in short

Founded in 1727 by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II, Jaipur was India's first planned city — laid out on a nine-block grid drawn from ancient architectural texts. It was painted pink in 1876 to welcome a royal guest, and the colour stayed. Today the old walled city still trades the way it did 300 years ago: gemstones, block prints and silver, street by street.

What makes Jaipur unique

The only Indian city built to a complete grid plan — and a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Workshops where families have cut gemstones and printed cloth for generations.

Sunrise at Amer before the crowds, then breakfast of kachori at a 60-year-old shop.
